Historical perspective of industrial connector design

Whether it is a professional electronic product user or a data center support technician or engineer, the appearance and operation of the connectors and cables used are similar, but there are many considerations for the design of industrial connectors. Connector manufacturers are mainly for the historical view of industrial connector design for many years.

Historical perspective of industrial connector design

As early as the 1970s, connector plugs were macroscopic in size because they were filled with large and medium palms and most of the fingers were used for gripping. People with smaller hands and fingers sometimes need to connect or disconnect the I/O interface copper cable assembly with both hands. It seems that most connector plugs and cables are too large for the average person, especially in the manufacturing industry.
At that time, the large gray thick metal back shell of the industrial connector assembly used a metal jack fastener of 6-60 size or larger. Cables and wires are also very large in diameter, usually between 18-22 AWG. This causes the cable assembly to be very heavy and difficult to align with the interface, pushing the plug into its mating receptacle connector. Because the connector plug is rectangular or block-shaped, it has a huge rib grip function. It also appears to have 25 gray overmolded plugs, usually with a smooth matte finish and cable jacket. Even some of the original cables have linear ribbed jackets. Industrial design specifications have been developed for testing, measurement and telephone equipment.
By the 1980s, connector plug sizes were often referred to as miniatures, sometimes ultra-small, and typically reduced overall size by about one-third. This new size range makes the connection easier. The metal backshell seems to have disappeared, and overmolded plugs with internal thin metal shields are the most common. Molded 4-40 molded thumbscrews are easier to use and take less time to fix. Typical wire gauge sizes are reduced to approximately 24 AWG, but the number of circuits is typically higher, so the cable diameter is still large, which leads to clumsiness in cable handling and wiring. It seems that 25 kinds of beige overmolded connector plugs have been developed in the past ten years, but everything seems to be the same, people are tired of it.
In the 1990s, connector plug sizes were again reduced, mostly called ultra-small, with some miniatures. This again reduces the average size by about 30%. The average wire diameter is reduced to 26-28 AWG. Overmolded connector plug plastic rear case with metal sprayed inside for shielding. Finally, the average cable diameter began to shrink over the decade, while the average connector component and cable assembly weight was also decreasing. The overall design is more in line with people's love, and the air flow in the equipment rack is better. Fasteners are typically latched or push-pull for more efficient link times.
Today's industrial connector plug housings, rear and overmolded parts, and cable jackets are almost all black, because grit and film protect the environment of these connectors and cables, so they look cleaner. Some devices are difficult to find the correct cable plug to disconnect or connect it because everything in the rack is black.
